Descender, Vol. 6: The Machine War Reviews
I absolutely loved volume 1 of Descender. It was my first dive into Lemire's work and in meantime he has become one of my favourite comicbook writers. While series series maintained quality it never reached same height as volume one or as some other Lemire's work but I'm glad it ends on high note. I loved the twist and unexpected ending. It gives even stronger flavour to what is already pretty unusual series and I liked setup for the new series. Ascender in now one my most anticipated series.
All the pieces are in place, and the war is about to begin. With Tim-21 and his friends trapped in the middle, only the littlest robot can save the day and stop humanity from being wiped from the universe. But a far more sinister, far more far-reaching plot is also coming to fruition as The Descenders finally make themselves known.
It's all been leading to this - it's cliché, but it's true. Jeff Lemire's intergalactic epic has been building and building to this final confrontation between organic ...more
Descender has been a fascinating tale of space, robots, cyborgs, humans, and beings that came before. We've come to know so many interesting and complex characters. In this volume, we get some back story for the new introductions. The story has been building towards the inevitable, but the interactions between these characters and the stories that Lemire creates are really the best and most interesting parts. As a fan of both Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's amazing watercolor, this series contin ...more
Hm...well...that was a finale. There were several things in this volume that I felt should not have been kept until the very end, especially Mizerd's "stick". And then the reveal on the final page of an upcoming tie-in series made me feel even more frustrated that some plot points were hidden until this book.
Overall, still an enjoyable series but the ending felt rushed.
Lemire and Nguyen finish this portion of their epic in splendid fashion. I was a bit surprised, I admit that this was the end of the book already, because the story was so clearly not finished yet--there's so much more Lemire and Nguyen obviously have to say here...and It's not that they won't see it, they simply want to tell it through a transition large enough that they've decided to change the title and start again. Marvel and DC do it often enough, right? Big twist? Title tweak and a new num ...more
bad news: this series ended.
good news: this series gets a sequel coming out this year.
i don't even know what to tell you guys except that this was beautiful and captivating. if you're a watercolour connoisseur just like i am, you must have at least one issue of this masterpiece, hat's off to the artist!!! i'm happy to have this entire series in my collection, and i am sure i will reread it at some point at least once.
as for the actual plot and characters, it certainly gets better right around th ...more
Another knock out by Jeff Lemire. Sounds like some weren’t crazy about the ending but I really loved it. Looking forward to the new sequel/spin off series next year. Jeff Lemire, you’ve done it again !
I love love love this series! I would not consider it hard core sci fi, but it is sci fi indeed. The watercolor art is beautiful and I love that it was done on watercolor paper as well. The characters are all pretty well developed despite this being a shortish series. I love seeing how they have all changed.
I am super excited for Ascender next year!
