I Am Still Alive Reviews
When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was My Side of the Mountain, in which a boy named Sam decides life in New York City isn't for him, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains and learns how to be independent and to survive in the woods. I vividly remember reading about how he hollowed out a tree with fire to live in, and that he learned how to make pancakes from acorn flour to feed himself. I Am Still Alive reminds me of that novel, but with the added tension of having bad guys complica ...more
Okay...I am putting this back on the shelf for now. Not because it is bad - the first 30 pages are really good, I just got bookmail I am geeking out over and need to start something from that stack now!
These reviews are the hardest to write.
Positive reviews are just a lot of gushing. Negative reviews are just a lot of nitpicking. But smack dab in the middle 3 star reviews? Oooh, these are so hard.
There are pros and cons to this book, and in the end, it kind of felt like the pros and cons balanced each other out and made a very solid 3. Imagine it being red as the cons and green as the pros and this book is that brown you get when you mix red and green. Meh.

This was tense, thrilling, and compelling! A 16 year old girl is stranded in the Alaskan wilderness for months on end with no survival knowledge. She has no parents, no guide, no mentor, and no help. And winter is approaching swiftly. This book kept me on my toes for its entirety, and I didn't want to set it down. Not sure why I didn't wanna give it a 5, but a 4.5 is still a highly respectable rating in my opinion.
I feel like three stars always look a little weird, so let me clarify that this is a positive three-star rating. This is a compelling survival story that is marketed as a revenge story and I just… didn’t get exactly what I was hoping. But let’s be real, this was still entertaining.
So, my main thought about this is that this is very well-written, but it's essentially just a survival story and doesn't go much beyond.
Maybe my main problem was that… I just didn’t get exactly what I wanted? The rev ...more

3.25/3.5 out of 5 stars
So, when I requested this book, the main element I was excited about was it being a survival story since I had not picked up one of those in a long time, and well, that’s exactly what I got.
This story follows Jess and the events leading up to her treacherous journey to stay alive in the Alaskan wilderness. The narration flips back and forth between the past and how she ended up there ...more

Normally I wouldn’t enjoy a survival story, they tend to be long and tedious since there’s a lack of exciting things and dialogue. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying “I Am Still Alive” it was an enthralling read! This may be a survival story but it’s also a story of revenge, and I w ...more
